Before
the birth of the Northwest Girls Coalition, there was virtually
no organized way to connect with other organizations in the
community doing either similar work or working with similar
populations. As a result, little collaboration existed among
these organizations. Many of us felt overwhelmed by the need
to capture what little funds seemed available for gender-specific
work, contributing to a sense of competition among like agencies.
As our community grows with the influx of people, wealth and
job opportunities within the Northwest, so does the need for
many of the programs offered by our non-profits. Thus the growth
of non-profit organizations serving girls has increased two
fold over the last 5 years. This presents a definite need, and
an opportunity, to come together as a community to support each
other, advocate for more funding to be directed to girls organizations,
cut down on duplication of programming and share resources and
ideas. This, in combination with the specific collaborative
relationships that are forged between member organizations,
helps us achieve our ultimate goal, which is helping girls better
navigate the difficult years of adolescence and grow into strong,
competent and contributing members of our community.
